Laptop Lunches are American-style bento boxes designed to help families pack nutritious, environment-friendly lunches for school, work, and travel. These sustainable lunch containers -- which come with a book of healthy lunch ideas and lunchmaking recipes -- are reusable, recyclable, and dishwasher safe. And all of our lunchboxes are Phthalates-free, Bisphenol A-free and lead-free! These plastic bento boxes are made in Northern California, the insulated carrying case and water bottle are made in China and are tested to be safe.
This set includes the Laptop Lunch insulated carrying case, the Laptop Lunch Bento Box with all inner containers and utensils (a fork and a spoon), and a copy of The Laptop Lunch User's Guide. These are dishwasher safe on the top rack. We suggest using ice pack to keep items cold. It is better not to heat items in the microwave in any plastic container, however, these are supposed to be as safe as any other safe plastic for use in the microwave but do NOT microwave the lids.
PLEASE NOTE that the new cases no longer have a water bottle. We have Blue Cases which still come with the thermos bottle (as shown above).
The carrying case is approximately 12 x 8 x 2.75 inches. The outer container is approximately 9 x 7 x 2 inches. The inner containers are approximately 4.5 x 3 x 1.75 inches, 4.75 x 3 x 1.75 inches, 2 x 3 x 1.75 inches, and 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.75 inches. This is a modular system so you can include or omit the containers as needed. The two larger containers hold 1 cup each. The two smaller containers hold 1/2 cup each. The larger and the tiniest containers have lids, the other containers are for use with dryer foods that do not have liquid in them.
Note on Safety from the manufacturer:
At Obentec, Inc. we are extremely concerned about toxins in our food and in the environment. Thus we take great care to ensure that we use the safest materials available. For this reason we manufacture our lunch containers here in California using plastics (polypropylene and polyethylene) that are FDA-approved for food use. We do not use any binding agents or plasticizers in the process. We do not use any materials that are suspected carcinogens or endocrine disrupters.
Sonya's comment: While we loved using Small Bolga Baskets and Covered Reed Lunch Baskets for lunches in Kindergarden and First Grade, my now 2nd and 5th grade children are so excited about their new, more mature and fun lunch boxes. Katherine has taken over the responsibility of making lunches for herself and Charlie and is taking pride in creating beutiful, colorful, and nutritious lunches for both of them each evening. I'm relieved to not be using an odd assortment of plastic containers, zip lock bags, etc. The water bottle has square sides (brilliant idea) and fits inside the insulated case to the side of the bento box. There is a zippered pocket on the outside of the carrying case to put important pieces of paper or to keep your cloth napkin. There is a name tag included - write your child's name with a permanent marker. There is also space on most of the inner boxes to write their name on the bottom of the box. Adults enjoy using these just as much as children for taking their lunches to work too! And of course, we are thrilled that the Bento Boxes are made in the USA and that all the parts are safe for our children to use.
"Emma loves the lunch box. She is making her own lunch now and is eating more. "Mom, I can see that the servings aren't that big, so I better eat it all." We are enjoying it! Kim N. Carmichael, CA 9/5/08"
"We have been using three of these fun lunch boxes in our household for a month or so now and I am very happy with them. My children have developed an interest in packing their own lunches and they are easy for them to clean. Their creativity in what to pack has been boundless; not just limited to sandwiches anymore. I first worried that there might not be room for enough food, but that hasn’t been a problem at all. I like that we are using less packaging and creating less trash (that used to come home in a soggy mess at the bottom of a backpack). I also like how neat it is and enjoy not having to try and cram too big containers into a too small lunch box. Great item! Keep carrying them so I can get one for me! Alexandra P. "So, my husband was pleasantly surprised by how much lunch fit in the boxes. Everything was nicely compact and cleaned up easily. Another thing I like about this lunchbox is its versatility. It isn't super cutesy, but the little containers are fun for smaller children. The strap is adjustable to work for both kindergarteners and adults, and the simple design is not one that can be outgrown. So, while the price seems high compared to big box stores, after four years, it will more than pay for itself. And, you'll know the food is safe." by Sara of saras-toy-box.blogspot.com on 9/2/09
